The 30 species as a whole arrived at 0,7 days later than expected in 2020 for Jomfruland and Lista, but still three days earlier than normal arrival of these species in 1990.

Arrival for Brent Goose (Lista BO)
Arrival for Brent Goose (Lista BO)
Median arrival time (points) in spring for Brent Goose at Lista Bird Observatory (1990-2020). Vertical lines from each point indicate when 10%-90% of the total number for the season has been reached. Yellow horizontal lines indicate averages for resp. 10%, 50% and 90% for median arrival time throughout the period.

By the end of 2020, the standardized trapping scheme at Jomfruland and Lista Bird Observatories (BO) have been carried out for 31 years. This report presents both long-term trends and data from the 2020 trapping season for 79 species included in the scheme. In addition, observation data for selected species are presented.

Low trapping numbers in spring at Lista
The ringing numbers for 2020 ended up below average for Lista BO, mainly due to the spring. The autumn catch was also lower than average at Lista, but in terms of numbers approximately as normal at Jomfruland BO.

During the spring 1.627 birds were trapped at Jomfruland BO, which is 2,2 % below the average (1990 – 2019). In autumn 5.567 birds were trapped, i.e. 4,3 % above average. Corresponding numbers at Lista BO were only 675 birds in spring, which is 19,1 % below average, and 3.533 birds in autumn, which is 11,4 % below the average number.

The migratory birds arrive earlier
In our phenology index for the spring, we show in the report that 30 selected migratory bird species now arrive in average 3,7 days earlier than they did when monitoring began in 1990. Arrival in 2020, on the other hand, was 0,7 days later than expected in relation to the development of our index, but still three days earlier than normal arrival of these species in 1990. Some species arrived later than expected in 2020, while others arrived much earlier.

Among the species that arrive earlier, the Greylag Goose and the Blackcap are remarkable with 14,7 and 12,5 days advanced arrival respectively. Common Whitethroat and Willow Wabler have also advanced their arrival with 7,4 and 6,6 days respectively. The Pink-footed Goose has been previously shown to have advanced its migratory time at the bird observatories almost one month earlier. The displacement of this species is now so big that it arrives before the standardized period starts at Jomfruland, which begins on April 1st.

The arrival of the different species shows a close correlation with temperature, and it is very likely that the earlier arrival is related to an increasingly warmer climate, both locally and globally. This is also the conclusion of a large scientific study published in 2019 in the journal "Ecological Indicators", which includes data from Jomfruland and Lista.

Important and unique monitoring
The monitoring at the bird observatories is unique in the Norwegian context providing information on the phenology (migratory route) of our most common passerine birds. This makes us able to see how climate change affects bird migration. The monitoring is also one of the few methods that can give us information about winter survival and breeding success of the different species. In addition, it provides important information about long-term trends in the populations of a variety of bird species from different habitats and environments, and from a large geographical area.

Focus on: Brent Goose

The Brent Goose is a relatively common species at Lista lighthouse. The spring migration of the species is particularly remarkable, as the majority of the population of the light-bellied subspecies hrota that breeds on Svalbard passes by in a very few days.

Although the median date for the Brent Goose at Lista is 26th May (average 1990 - 2020), and the species until 2018 has had a concentrated main migration from 25th to 29th May, the first individuals were seen migrating as early as 20th of May in spring of 2020. In addition, almost 90% of the birds were seen migrating on 21st and 22nd May.
This is not just approx. one week earlier than the start of the period 1990-2019, but also a tangent of the earliest median date the Brent Goose has passed Lista. This species shows now a clear tendency to arrive earlier than it did before 2018. The number of Brent Goose counted in 2020 was the highest at Lista ever, with 5.902 individuals (average 1990-2019 is 2.423 ind.). The change in arrival date for this species with data from Lista Bird Observatory is -4.0 days.
