The Ortolan Bunting breeds in large parts of Europe, parts of North Africa, and east of Mongolia. It was an annual visitor at Lista before, but it has declined sharply. The population in Europe and Norway shows a strong decline. The Ortolan Bunting is classified as critically endangered (CR) in the Norwegian Red List. The reason for this is the small pupulation size.
