It has been published in several newspapers and websites that thousands of Puffins were found dead on the Norwegian beaches some weeks ago. Lista beaches haven’t been an exception. Around 155 Puffins have been mainly collected in Nesheimsanden, Kviljosanden, Hanangersanden and Husebysanden. Last week Tor Oddvar Hansen (from Lista Natur Museum) and Magdalene Langset (from NINA) studied the birds at Lista Natur Museum, in order to determine the age and sex of every bird, physical condition, collect samples and take measurements.

The main target is to know where they come from and what is the cause of death. The data collected until now indicate that the most probable cause of death has been the lack of food, as most of the birds showed signs of starvation. However, other causes haven’t been discarded yet.

Three of the collected birds at Lista had a ring on the leg. Two of them were ringed in the same colony in Craigleith (Scotland), they were ringed 22 and 30 years ago respectively!

We are expectant to know what are the results from the analysis carried out at NINA and Veterinærinstituttet. The collected material will be preserved at Lista Natur Museum for further studies.
